Position Summary: Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this exempt-level position will lead a Manufacturing Engineering department responsible for creating and maintaining effective production flow through the factory, Fabrication through Assembly and Test, that consists of organized work centers tailored to the flow of work through the center, standard operating procedures and work instructions, accurate product routings, and supporting tooling / fixtures / jigs.  This function will also oversee continuous improvement initiatives using data to highlight the issue and relying on cross-functional teams to drive measurable results.  This position will assist Business Unit Managers and Supervisors in Production to achieve operating targets, implement the Operating Strategy, and deliver measurable results in their respective areas.  This person will assist the Chief Operating Officer to drive development of technical competencies, critical thinking, and lean mindset to enable an effective, efficient and predictable Operations Team.   
 
Essential Functions:
  • Evaluates current processes and develops, implements and maintains all changes with consideration of Operating efficiencies; owner for Continuous Improvement (Lean Mindset) and works with his/her department to lead lean initiatives for key Operations projects
  • Recommends and/or makes improvements in business unit / value stream machinery, equipment, industrialization and manufacturing methods and provides capital investment justification to the leadership team; links implementation to balanced set of KPIs to assess effectiveness of the technology
  • Develops manufacturing planning, initial tooling requirements and costs, capability requirements, control plans, and assessments, which facilitate the definition and specification of manufacturing processes
  • Establishes and implements manufacturing flow lines, workstation layouts and organization, and station controls that optimize value added operations, operating costs, lead time / cycle time, and product / process quality
  • Recommends appropriate fabrication processes considering, functionality, volumes and cost targets
  • Identifies biggest knowledge gaps and provide guidance/training in data collection and analytics, systematic problem solving, and root-cause analysis; leads department to use data-based systemic problem solving and corrective action
  • Serves as an enterprise resource for cause / effect analyses, investigations, statistical studies, and corrective action planning
  • Develops and manages transfer plans for new products, product upgrades, and engineering changes
  • Investigates and diagnoses causes of breakdowns and develops / implements preventative and predictive maintenance programs to improve reliability
  • Manages the maintenance department and takes an active role in driving development projects and value engineering to ensure consistent evaluation and documentation of technologies, processes, adequate configuration and preventative maintenance of systems and equipment
  • Coordinates maintenance, engineering and process development initiatives to ensure increased efficiencies
  • Compiles, prepares and presents information for project updates and technical presentations to staff and executive management
  • Manage direct reports, and in turn assure they are managing departmental resources, by providing coaching, feedback, reminders and mentoring as appropriate to enhance the functioning of the team
  • Create weekly work schedules and post OT by weekly deadline; work towards managing OT as capacity surge versus a make-up for the week
  • Set measurable goals for the day, week, and fiscal month and measure performance against those goals; ensure workforce clearly understands these and are working towards achieving them
  • Maintain positive employee relations through fair and consistent application of company policies and procedures and use of direct and proactive communication skills
  • Apply the company’s corrective action process to monitor and improve performance, attendance, and conduct/behavior issues
  • Prepare and communicate regular performance appraisals and development plans for assigned employees in conjunction with the company’s standards
  • Take an active role in resolving and mediating employee conflict situations in a timely and appropriate manner, consulting with and/or referring such matters to Human Resources as needed
  • Review and approve vacation requests, and complete required paper work and administrative tasks
  • Participate in interviewing, selecting, orientating and training new staff members; this includes administering a training / apprentice program as required to quickly ramp-up the new hire and make him/her effective
  • Conduct regular meetings with team members as a group and individually, and educates team on company and department procedures, changes, new information, etc., asking for input and obtaining support and buy-in from the team.
 
Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in Engineering, Operations or Business majors preferred
  • In lieu of education, the company reserves the right to substitute comparable experience, education or certifications.
  • Industrial Product Manufacturing experience strongly preferred
    • Especially electrical and mechanical assembly experience with moderate to complex products
  • At least 5 years’ management experience in a manufacturing environment requirement required
    • Must be a hands-on people leader who enjoys a frequent shop floor presence
    • Looks for ways to improve safety and educate team about safer working techniques
  • Experience with Manufacturing Engineering discipline and methods
  • Experience with Continuous Experience or Lean experience strongly preferred
  • Experience with identifying and implementing cost-savings initiatives preferred
  • Experience in a high mix, low volume manufacturing environment strongly preferred
  • Must be able to work effectively with Quality, Sourcing, Mechanical and Design Engineers, Process Engineers, and Maintenance to achieve corporate targets for safety, quality, and on time delivery in an extremely fast-paced environment
  • Project management experience preferred
